Cornell, p. 530. Coumont 38.7. — A very rare first edition, limited to 1,275 copies, printed on Dutch Mould-Made Paper specially made for this edition. This copy bears the number 800. – Alphonseus Joseph Mary August Montague Summers (1880–October 1948), like Johann Joseph Gassner and Joseph Görres, simply believed in the real power of demons and the malevolence of witches. Over the course of more than thirty years of study, Summers—who described himself as a Catholic reverend—fully immersed himself in the intellectual world of the ancient demonologists. Summers republished the work of the English nobleman Reginald Scot (1538–1599), though expanded with his own introduction. The first edition had been published in 1584. Scot had written his work under the influence of the mass executions of the witches of Kent. However, Scot’s treatise displeased King James I of England, who ordered the book to be burned. – The leather spine is slightly rubbed; the linen is slightly stained and has faint foxing along the edges. The book block is untrimmed. The inside cover shows traces of a partially removed bookplate. There are isolated instances of minimal foxing.
